Tell us about your company philosophy.
Six Degrees Society was founded on the belief that networking doesn’t have to awkward, transactional or only about business, but should be about the creation of personal, professional and future life connections through unique events and programming.
What inspired you to start the company?
I was inspired to start the company for 3 reasons:
- First, our time is super limited and jam packed and wanted to find a way to maximize how we make connections.
- Second, I had many friends that should/needed to be connected and I was sick of networking happening in the digital sphere only and wanted to bring it back to IRL.
- Third, I wanted to find or create a space where women could lean on each other to find resources, learn new skills and meet new people.
What makes your approach different and unique?
Women have a bad rep of being intimidating and catty. We make the room safe and the environment homey. We never ever want someone to feel intimidated. We also do not make the events about what you do. We don't care if you are a millionaire or fresh out of college, we are all here to meet like-minded individuals and your success doesn't define who you are.
Who are some other innovators that inspire you and why?
It’s too hard to name one or two innovators! I am inspired by the incredible women and men innovators I’ve met throughout this entrepreneurial journey.
Tell us about an unexpected challenge you faced when building your business.
Learning everything as I go has definitely been the biggest challenge! Mailchimp, Squarespace, Splashthat, analytics, you name it!
At what point did you think, "now we've made it"?
When people start signing up for our events after finding us through social media or an article we were mentioned in. To know that we’ve grown beyond our initial circle of supporters is tremendous.
What's next for your company?
We are currently live in seven cities (NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, Miami and Atlanta) and plan to launch Washington, D.C. this fall. Next year, we hope to continue growing our chapters nationally and even internationally (London we're looking at you).
