It’s no secret that summer in the city is sweltering, sweaty and sticky. Navigating the city in the blazing heat can turn even the most pristine makeup into a literal hot mess. To prevent this disaster from unfolding, I called upon the expertise of one of VIVE’s top makeup artists, Logan Greenwood, to share some of the tricks up her sleeve.
1) Use the correct moisturizer for your skin type
Appropriate hydration is key, especially if you have oily skin. If you over-hydrate, all the makeup you apply later will slip off your face. We particularly recommend the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, which has a matte finish, and the La Mer Moisturizing Cream if you’re feeling luxurious.
2) “No Sweat” Skin Prep Pro Primer by Mehron
This primer slows down sweating underneath your makeup and is Logan’s number one product for summer. It was originally used by clowns in the circus to keep their makeup on while they did all these crazy stunts in the heat, but now it is widely used for commercial purposes too. It’s especially popular in bridal makeup because of its longwearing properties, and after testing it out, we definitely agree that this product is practically “disaster-proof.”
3) Apply both setting powder and a setting spray
After applying your foundation or CC/BB cream, blush, concealer and bronzer as usual, we recommend using both a setting powder and a setting spray. First apply a light dusting of setting powder to removes excess shine, then use setting spray to lock your makeup in place and give your skin a dewy finish. This will ensure that your makeup lasts longer in the summer sunshine and prevents an overly shiny complexion. For setting powder, we love the Bobbi Brown Retouching Powder because it is color-correcting, invisibly diminishing the appearance of dark spots, fine lines and other imperfections. For setting sprays, our favorites are the Mehron Barrier Spray and the Urban Decay All Nighter Spray.
4) Use eye shadow primer
Oily eyelids are really common in summer, and this can cause your eyeliner to smudge or pop up above the crease of your eyelid. Eye shadow primer is a must for long lasting eye makeup. We recommend an eye shadow primer by Bobbi Brown or Urban Decay. You can also consider using cream eye shadow instead of powder eye shadow because creams are more sweat-resistant and tend to be longer wearing. We particularly love the vast selection of shades of the Sigma Beauty Eye Bases.
5) First apply a layer of regular mascara and then apply a layer of waterproof mascara on top
Mascara is particularly sensitive to sweat and tends to leave marks on your under eye. To prevent this from happening, don’t just use waterproof mascara; apply a layer of regular mascara and then a layer of waterproof mascara. This seals the mascara in and prevents it from smudging. One of our favorites is the Diorshow Iconic Mascara, which comes in regular and waterproof editions. Adding a topcoat of this mascara gives your lashes extra volume that lasts all day long, and unlike most other waterproof mascaras, it's relatively easy to take off.
