Whenever I think about beauty, I think about glamour - Old Hollywood’s sultry eyes, the rise of velvet curtains, the confidence that radiates from the black and white screen. And while I can’t exactly have Audrey Hepburn’s eyebrows or Lucille Ball’s red hair, I can always swipe on a little bit of glamour with mascara.
My go-to product has always been mascara. My lashes have always been stubborn in their refusal to grow, curl, or anything else that signals their existence, and that shiny portable tube has always been there to save the day. In particular, I like Clinique High Impact Mascara (they also have an eyelash primer, which is handy). I also can’t get enough of Apple by Apple Super Lash mascara - it supposedly has avocado oil in it, so my lashes love it too! The Super Lash mascara also smells really great; an added bonus with the amount of times I’m applying each day.
A few quick swipes (or, three or four in my case) always make me look more awake and ready for whatever is in store for the day. More importantly, it makes me feel like I have a bit of the Golden Age of Hollywood with me - those days where love was ravishing, cowboys were good, and Vespas were all that you needed. Mascara is easy. It’s simple; it’s quick - unlike pencils, curlers and brushes, which seem presumptuous when placed at the bottom of an evening bag. And, best of all, it makes me feel great. That, I think, is what beauty is - feeling great, wherever you are.
