I recently had the chance to visit my long time hair stylist Judy Chamberlain at Mizu Salon. A specialist in cutting and styling, Judy hails from Saratoga, New York and is frequently seen sporting a bold bright lip. Being a hair stylist myself for the last 12 years, I was excited to chat with Judy about her career in beauty in New York City.
How did you start out in hair?
I had always been interested in hair and makeup, but I was in school for something completely different and just didn't think of beauty as a career option. Then I came across Arrojo Cosmetology School and was blown away! It was in the heart of New York City, and the curriculum was outstanding. As soon as I toured it, I knew it was where I needed to be. After graduating Arrojo, I immediately started apprenticing at Mizu New York, and I am now a full time stylist there.
What do you love most about your job?
I love helping people make the most out of their hair by teaching them how to style and maintain it at home. I love that I can make a living by making people feel good about themselves. That’s ultimately why I got into this industry, and it’s what keeps me going!
What was the craziest style you’ve ever done?
I've definitely done some interesting hair in the past, but the one that stands out the most is when I was assisting Dimitrios Tsioumas at ABS Chicago. We had to make these massive hair pieces out of styrofoam and colored hair extensions. I inhaled at least a can of hairspray when we were prepping in the hotel room the night before the big show.
If you could do any person’s hair, who would it be?
It would absolutely be Yo-Landi Visser of Die Antwoord. She's got amazing style, and I'm obsessed with her music. She gives no fucks, and I love it!
How do you care for your own hair?
I have fine, straight hair and forever want it to be wavy and big! Most of the time, I'll let it air dry then run through with a curling iron and loads of texture paste to create second-day, dirty hair.
What do you think is the trendiest hair look at the moment?
Right now, I'm definitely getting a ton of requests for mid-length cuts and for hair that's not quite wavy and pretty messy.
Why do you think that is?
I think the look of choice is evolving from the typical pretty Kardashian waves into something more undone.
If you were going on vacation and could only bring three hair products, what would you bring?
1) R+Co Analog cleansing conditioner: Cleanses and conditions in one, less to pack!
2) Living Proof Instant Repair Cream: Since going blonde, my hair definitely needs some extra TLC, and this does it weightlessly!
3) R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo paste: This gives major texture and absorbs oil as well!
A huge thanks to Judy for taking the time out of her busy schedule to speak with me! You can see more photos of Judy’s work by checking out her Instagram @judzdoeshair
