Summer: How did you start out in makeup?

I started by doing makeup for different brands at a retail store in high school. In the beginning, I actually wanted to go into special effects makeup and prosthetics, so I worked for a theater in Richmond. I even secretly applied to a special effects makeup school in LA. Ultimately I decided to go to a regular college, but the makeup passion stuck.

As a freelance makeup artist, what happens in your typical day?

In the freelance world, you only put out as much as you put in. For example, yesterday I was up at 5:30 in the morning to do Alicia Quarles’ makeup for E News. I worked on a photo shoot in the afternoon, and then I did an event for Bobbi Brown cosmetics.

So what’s been the most exciting event that you’ve worked on so far?

Doing the makeup for E News has been the most amazing thing because I’ve always watched these shows and I love being able to see my work on the TV at home. It’s more than I thought my career could ever be and I’m really humbled by how blessed I’ve been so far.

You mentioned that in the past you did a lot of extreme character makeup. What was the craziest style you’ve ever done?

I’ve been working for the U.S. Department of Emergency Response; and they have these fake emergencies to train new policemen and paramedics, who have to pretend its a real emergency. I use makeup to create cuts, gunshot wounds, pieces of debris in wounds and other gory details on people. It’s crazy what a drastic effect a little makeup can have on someone’s appearance!

If you could do any person’s makeup, who would it be?

This is such a hard question! I guess I would want to do Lupita Nyong’o or Angelina Jolie because they are beautiful women who exude a certain strength and poise.

What’s your personal makeup style?

I like to make someone look healthy and natural, focusing on the skin and eyebrows; these are my favorite features of the face.

What do you think is the trendiest look in makeup at the moment?

Corals are really in right now, but they’re difficult for people to wear.

Oh really? Why is that?

Everyone has a different skin tone. In particular, there is a huge range in the undertones of people’s lips. The natural undertone of your lips can have shades of purple, pink or beige, so the final result of putting on lipstick will vary depending on the natural lip color underneath. To wear coral lipstick well, you need to think about how your natural lip color will affect the color of the lipstick. It’s all about the color wheel. Makeup is simply color, light and shape.

If you were going on vacation and could only bring three makeup products, what would you bring?

Tinted lip balm, my Anastasia Brow Wiz and under eye concealer.

What do you love most about your job?

I love that every day is different. I’m a really competitive person and I love the hustle of constantly striving to keep my calendar filled three months in advance. I also love being in New York City. There’s so much to do all the time.

I’d like to give a huge thanks to Logan for taking the time from her busy schedule to speak with me. You can see more photos of Logan’s work by checking out her Instagram @logan_greenwood and her website http://www.logangreenwood.com/.
