Vive Hacks: Barely There, The No-Makeup Makeup Trend

No-makeup makeup? It sounds like an oxymoron, or a look that doesn’t quite deserve a name. Yet, it has soared in popularity in recent months, appearing both on and off the red carpet.  It has certainly made a bold presence, even without a bold lip.

So what is no-makeup makeup? This low maintenance look lauds the illusion of not wearing any makeup: flawless skin, enhancing features without bright colors or heavy shading and using browns and beiges instead of blacks or shimmers. The secret is to accentuate natural features; foundation, mascara, great brows, and natural-tinted gloss are the main components of creating this look. The natural brow shape frames the face (eyebrows cleaned up, filled in, following that eye socket arch); natural gloss defines the lips, and mascara accentuates the eyes. Concealer and moisturizer help create perfect, glowing skin without red spots or dark bags. It certainly requires less product than a full face, and less product in the summer is always a plus.

Through social media, no-makeup faces have garnered nearly twelve million pictures on Instagram alone. Celebrities have joined in the intimate sharing; Megan Fox’s second picture ever on Instagram was an early morning shot, labeled as “no makeup.” Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyonce, and Miley Cyrus all have shown their faces without the dramatic eye or bold lip. In some respects, this no-makeup sharing adds to the celebrity of their character; they truly are #flawless. Yet, one can’t help noticing through the filters (whether they be LoFi or Mayfair), the perfected eyebrows and perfect skin that are the epitome of the no-makeup makeup look.

But the no-makeup look is just that, a look - another style that has recently become fashionable; the other alternative is to simply be bare faced. True, the no-makeup look may be a standard that most would not be able to meet without product, but it also is an inspiration for us to take better care of our skin, our eyes and our faces. It is also a call for us to see others in a softer light. Perhaps those under-eye bags are a testament to how hard you have worked; those freckles are a memory of a great family Fourth celebration and the small eyes crinkles a result of many nights of laughter.  This trend is not a black and white scale of what is perfect, and perhaps is why so many women love it.

So whether it is with naturals or fun pinks; sharp contours or metallic shadows, no-makeup reminds us that makeup is a way to express individuality, and no-makeup makeup is yet another look in your toolkit.
