In our last Vive Hair Hacks article we offered insight into treating dry hair. This month we present easy solutions for creating volume depending on your type of hair.
Building volume can be a constant challenge, but thankfully you don’t need thick hair to make your hair look the part. You need the right products for your specific hair type. Not all products work for everyone. While your friend with thick hair may rave about her styling mousse that same mousse may leave your hair weighed down and lifeless. Depending on your desired end result and whether your hair is fine, thick or curly there are volumizing products ideal for you.
Fine hair requires lightweight products that don’t overpower or weigh down your hair. If a volumizer is too thick or too heavy for fine hair, it will result in a leftover, sticky residue. If you have fine hair, look for products specifically targeted for your hair type.
For example, L’Oréal Professionnel’s Expert Volumetry Series offers products specially formulated for fine hair. The product line features two unique ingredients: salicylic acid and Intra-CycalaneTM. Salicylic acid works to remove oil directly from the roots, reducing weight without drying your scalp. On the other hand, Intra-CycalaneTM, an exclusive ingredient scientifically crafted by L'Oreal, acts as a filler that works from the inside out to plump up your hair stands. Products that can add volume to fine hair include shampoo, conditioner and root spray. Dry shampoo is also great for adding an extra boost.
For a tousled, disheveled look with fine hair try a texturizing powder spray like L’Oréal Professionnel’s Wild Stylers Next Day Hair. Concentrate the spray at the roots, although this product can be used all over for instant volume. It can also be used to create tousled texture for ponytails and chignons.
Most importantly, remember to look for products targeted specifically for fine hair. When blow drying your hair, flip your head over or lift the brush up and away from the scalp. These techniques will boost the volumizing power of your products.
Medium to Thick Hair
For those who struggle with fine hair it may come as a surprise that thick hair can also present volume challenges. With thick hair, the hair strands themselves are denser so hair can easily be weighed down. Long layers are a great solution. Adding long layers to your haircut will allow for more movement and less weighed down locks. Product-wise, mousses and anti-frizz sprays are best for adding body to an already lush mane.
For adding volume to medium to thick hair, try Aveda’s Phomollient Styling Foam. Aveda’s specialized formula contains organic ingredients, including honey, burdock and marshmallow root. These three ingredients work together to create body and shine. Medium to thick hair can soak in 40% more water, easily creating dreaded frizz. In order to combat excess frizz, follow through with Big Sexy Hair’s Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray. This lightweight hair spray doubles as a humidity resistant spray. The formula contains polymers that create a protective shield defending against humidity and frizz.
A combination of a good layered haircut, mousse and an anti-humidity spray will keep your hair voluminous and bouncy. Beware adding an oil-based anti-frizz spray, which can make thick hair appear oily or weighed down.
While curly haired women may be blessed with natural fullness and bounce, curls still pose concerns when it comes to volume. Curly hair texture takes longer for natural oils to travel from the scalp to the ends, causing ends to have a drier appearance. Frequent shampooing of curly hair can lead to even drier ends and added potential for frizz. Therefore, combating frizz and dryness can be difficult.
The DevaCurl hair line is specially designed for curly hair. The all-in-one multitasking DevaCurl NoPoo is great for cleansing and conditioning. DevaCurl’s signature zero lather conditioning cleanser not only hydrates and cleans the scalp, but also stimulates curls to reveal healthy, bouncy texture. For volume and natural texture use DevaCurl Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam. This alcohol-free foam contains humidity resistant ingredients that work together to create body, volume and shine without frizz.
Similar to every type of hair, curly hair also needs a pick-me-up every once in a while. Try Bumble and Bumble’s Pre-style/Re-style primer to reactivate your second-day curls. Spray a light mist and scrunch with your fingers to revive curls. This product contains Bumble and Bumble’s HydraSculpt Blend of Brazilian oils which can be used out of the shower as a detangler and curl definer. With a pick-me-up spray your curls can go from work to happy hour in no time.
Volume can be difficult to master, but with the combination of knowledge and customized products – you can find solutions that work for you.
