Vive Hacks: Water, Water Everywhere

Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, winter is just around the corner. And, while winter weather in New York may be unsightly—you can hear us, “polar vortex, ugh”—our skin doesn’t have to be. What’s our trick? Water.

Water is everywhere in our daily lives: we use water to brush our teeth, to wash our dishes and, most importantly, to drink. We all know that we’re meant to drink those 8 glasses a day, but actually hitting that sweet spot is no easy feat.

With the sudden emergence of new kinds of technological innovation to track your water intake, we decided to take a deeper look at earth’s most abundant resource, and the novel ways to stay beautifully hydrated this winter.

Let’s recap: every drop counts

If your skin returns slowly to its original position, you may be dehydrated.

It’s common knowledge that water is great for your health, but why exactly is it this the case?

Water boosts your metabolism, helps digestion and is a key factor for great skin. After all, your skin is filled with water, so dehydration makes your skin appear dry and wrinkled. But by the time you actually feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated!

To ensure that you’re drinking enough water, try this simple hand test. Dehydration decreases your skin’s elasticity, so pinch the skin on the back of your hand and pull it upwards. If your skin doesn’t snap back quickly and instead maintains it’s shape for a few seconds, you’re dehydrated.

Water Innovation

So what are some of the ways in which technology is reshaping our conception of staying hydrated?

The bt-analyze device identifies the moisture content of your skin.

While scientific analyses of the moisture content of your facial skin used to only take place at expensive dermatological clinics, you can now measure your skin moisture at home using a portable moisture checker, such as the high-tech bt-analyze device from Bio-therapeutic.  All you have to do is place a sensor on your facial skin.

Wearable technology is also helping us lead healthier and more hydrated lives. Fitbit’s wearable wristbands monitor daily water intake and periodically remind you when to have a glass.
